Do you know what is beneath your property? If not, don’t worry, you are not the only one – our drain mapping service gives our customers the information they need to understand their drainage systems and avoid costly mistakes and stress.
Talk to usDrain Mapping Explained
The drain mapping process starts with our specialist CCTV drain camera being lowered down into the pipes to capture the precise plan of a drainage system.
The camera unit gives our engineers accurate measurements and directions, this data is programmed into software that maps out where drains run to and from.
It gives the following insights:
- Location of pipes and manhole covers
- Highlights which way water is running – giving a clear understanding of how pipes are connected and where water is flowing to
- Condition of pipes – shows cracks, breaks or tree root intrusion that might need addressing
- Shows what drains belong to owners or local authorities, or are shared drains
Who Does It Help?
Our mapping services can give useful insights to anyone who is:
- Buying or selling a domestic or commercial property – gives homeowners clear understanding of drainage layout, condition and ownership.
- About to start construction or renovation on their property – data such as depth and location of drains ensures legal compliance and prevents damages.
- Experiencing drainage issues – shows exact location of structural drainage issues and can locate unknown manholes.
- Solving legal disputes – to clarify who owns what and resolves who is responsible for paying for repairs. As well as disputes, local authorities also require drain maps for planning permission and assessing flood risk.
Drainage Mapping in Action
We were recently contacted by a worried home-owner reporting serious problems with a blocked drain in West Wittering. After having problems with intermittent slow draining from the bath and shower for over a year, they suddenly started to experience the bath getting severely blocked and backed up with dirty water; with family staying and only one shared bathroom, the customer knew it was time to call our experts in to help.
On arrival, we used our high-pressure water jet to clear the initial drain blockage caused by a build-up of tissue paper. Then using our CCTV camera, we checked all the runs were clear, and that’s when we found a hidden manhole cover under the patio.
As we explored further, we found the blockage they were experiencing was down to a damaged pipe coming from the hidden manhole we had uncovered. The customer had recently had a new fence post and panel installed which had gone through the pipe joint unknowingly.
Along with replacing the section of broken pipe with a new joint, we carried out a full CCTV survey report and mapping of their drains, so they now know exactly where all their drains run to and where the manhole covers are. This has given them peace of mind that they now have the information they need to avoid unwanted drainage surprises in the future.
Another successful job, with a very happy customer!
