When showering it’s near impossible to stop hair from falling down the drain while you wash. This build up of hair can affect your upstairs drains causing slow-draining plug holes.

Leaving blocked drains alone can lead to leaks and burst pipes and then mould. If you think you might have had a blockage causing more issues in your home, we are ready to rectify any issue. Read on for some general tips to avoid hair building up in your drain.

  • Brush your hair before you get in the shower – This is a simple pre-emptive step. By just giving your hair a quick run through you remove loose hairs which are the prime suspects of a build-up.
  • Purchase a hair-catching drain cover – This will collect any loose hair before it ends up down the plughole. This can be cleared out after each shower keeping your drains clear.
  • Put a shower cap on – When you aren’t washing your hair, you can use a shower cap to stop dead hair from falling down the drain. This is also beneficial for your hair as you avoid over-washing it and affecting its natural oils.

How Do You Clear Hair from Your Drains?

Purchasing a chemical drain cleaner is a quick solution to any blockages. For an immediate, nifty home remedy:

  1. Take off any plughole covers you have
  2. Pour 2 parts baking soda and 1 part into the drain
  3. Leave for 10 minutes
  4. Flush the solution down with boiling water
  5. Repeat regularly to avoid build-up

Why Shouldn’t Hair Go Down the Drain?

Any foreign object going down the drain is bad as it almost always leads to build up. A few strands of hair may not feel like they will have a negative impact on your drains, but after some time they will!

Bacteria Can Build Up

Hair can act as a net for bacteria as dirt and scum collect everything you don’t want in your drains. This can cause unpleasant smells when you’re trying to wash or have guests over. Bacteria build-up can affect allergies and asthma negatively.

Leaks and Leaky Pipes

As we mentioned before, the build-up can cause leaky pipes. This then starts to get costly the longer you leave it. Taking a few pre-emptive measures and regularly cleaning your drains is the best solution!
