The “Unflushables” – What Not to Flush Down the Toilet

Drain blocked with wipes

As a drainage company, we see so many different things that people flush away that should never be flushed down the toilet but disposed of properly.

What Shouldn’t You Flush Down the Toilet?

Toilet “unflushables” we see on a regular basis:

  • Baby wipes
  • Make-up removal wipes
  • Sanitary products
  • Cotton buds
  • Incontinence pads
  • Toilet fresheners

All of these items can potentially cause blockages to your drainage system. This, in turn, will need clearing and comes with a cost.

“Don’t flush it, bin it” is what we suggest to customers after we have visited and unblocked their drains.

What is the Strangest Thing We’ve Found Blocking a Toilet?

We regularly visit homes and businesses where we see some strange blockages, but the team left a homeowner surprised when called to investigate a blockage with a difference…

The owner couldn’t clear the blockage herself and thought she had better call us in. After our initial investigation to find the cause, we had to remove the toilet to clear the U-bend.

We were very surprised to find a BMW stuck in the bend – yes, a BMW! This isn’t something we have had to remove before!

We removed the BMW and reinstalled the toilet and all was working fine. When we explained to the customer what had caused the stressful blockage, she was relieved to find out where her three-year-old son’s toy car had gone.

To this day, we have not removed any other cars, but you never know in this line of work what you might find stuck in the drains!
