How We Fixed a Drain Run Blockage Caused by Tree Roots at a Local School in Chichester

CCTV survey of a drain blocked by tree roots

When a blockage in a drainage system strikes it can very easily go from unpleasant smells and slow running drainage to a full system build-up in no time, that’s why it’s essential that our drainage experts can diagnose and fix issues – fast!

A CCTV drain survey provides a real-time view of pipes, it allows us to quickly identify where blockages are, highlights even the smallest of cracks and in the case of a most recent callout, show tree roots intrusion.

Flooding in a Playground

During a period of bad weather and heavy rain, we were contacted by a local school about a blocked drain in Chichester.

We spoke to the caretaker who told us that one of the surface water drains in the playground kept overflowing. The flooding was disrupting staff and school activities, as the area had to be cordoned off and children had to play in another part of the playground.

They believed that it was a tennis ball had got blocked in the drain run, so on arrival, our team were surprised by what they found.

Finding the Root Cause

When we arrived, we started by jetting the run with a high-pressure water jet. This is regularly used to clear drains as it breaks through debris and tough scale while cleaning pipes, so we knew, that this would be able to remove a tennis ball thought to be causing the blockage.

Once we finished jetting the pipe, we then used a CCTV camera to get a clearer look of the drain from the inside, and to everyone’s surprise it wasn’t a ball causing the blockage at all… it was tree roots!

Cutting Out the Problem

After an inspection of the grounds, we found the tree nearby that was causing the root growth in the pipe and suggested that we cut them out. So, our team got to work root cutting using our milling machine. We cut out roots along the length of the pipes, removing the obstruction and allowing water to flow through the pipes once again.

Re-lining the Pipes

A few days later our team was back on site to install a liner to the pipe. Our pipe relining services are needed when there is any structural damage. It was essential after the tree root removal we fit a liner inside the damaged pipe, this ensures that the pipe is structurally strong again, preventing any future leaks, cracks or damages without the stress and mess of full playground excavation.

If you have drainage concerns, it’s important to attend to potential signs or smaller drainage issues quickly before they turn into bigger problems down the line.
